Inquiring minds want to know…what design trends can you expect to see in new construction homes in 2022?! Harrison Homes is here to share what our team is seeing firsthand in custom home design.

“After the chaotic past two years, people are really reevaluating their list of must haves and wants in custom home design. Homeowners want spaces that bring serenity and joy while delivering the functionality their family needs. That functionality encompasses both practical uses like home offices and home gyms, but also increasingly centers on entertainment and pleasure: screened-in porches, pools, outdoor kitchens, home bars and wine cellars etc. It’s exciting to be at the forefront of building homes that deliver their vision.”

Jenny Delgado, Harrison Homes’ Director of Design

Harrison Homes’ design trend predictions include:

  1. NATURAL MATERIALS

Homeowners are leaning toward natural stone countertops, like marble and quartzites in kitchens and primary bathrooms.  No two natural slabs are alike so it’s a fun way for homeowners to express their individual style and put their unique stamp on the space.

We’re also seeing people incorporate real stone inside their home, either through kitchen backsplashes, cast stone hoods, fireplace surrounds or even an accent wall in the bathroom!  Natural materials bring the outdoors in and add complex, interesting textures. It’s exciting to see homeowners embrace natural materials in a more dramatic way and beyond the use of shiplap.

2. ARCHES AND CURVES

Arches are on fire!  We’re designing and building arches into home exteriors and interiors in a big way. Double barrel arches and true radius arches add beautiful character to the home. Custom arched doors, windows and barrel vault ceilings create visual interest and make a statement.

We’re also seeing curves making their way into kitchen range hoods, home furniture and accessories, and walkways.

3. COLORFUL CABINETS

2022 is the year for the return of color in the kitchen! Harrison Homes is slowly seeing a shift in desired cabinet colors. Shades of cream and tan have made their way into our new build homes to break up the classic white kitchens that have trended so strongly for the past several years.  Stained cabinets are back, and not just white oak but ash stains, darker gray and or black stains for a more sophisticated take on the kitchens of the 2000s.  Homeowners are also embracing mixing countertop materials and colors.

4. GO GREEN

Green continues to trend hot!  Because green is rooted in nature, it’s a great way to incorporate color without feeling too trendy. Whether it’s painting the walls, vanities or selecting a bold green tile, bringing shades of green into your home just feels natural.

Sherwin Williams 2022 Color of the Year falls in line with this trend.  Their selection, Evergreen Fog, is a “soothing, subtle shade to freshen up any space.” This paint color is “a gorgeous green-meets-gray” hue.

5. BEAUTIFUL DETAILS

Over the past few years, new build home designs have been very simple. Clean walls. No crown molding. Less trim. We’re seeing a shift of reintroducing classic and subtle details into new build homes like corbels and decorative trim, such as the Dentil Mold.  Moroccan influence is also making its way into our homes using drywall to create shapes or adding in more classic details.

Home design trends in 2022 promise to be exciting! Would you incorporate any of these design elements into your custom home? A colorful kitchen or sophisticated green den perhaps? Comment and share your thoughts, we’d love to hear what you think.
